HRH The Duchess of Cornwall marked the centenary of the first podiatry organisation in the UK with a reception at Clarence House on Thursday 16 February 2012. To mark the historic occasion, a sculpture of Her Royal Highness, commissioned by The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, was revealed by artist Penelope Lacey. The Duchess thanked the Society for the fantastic job they do to “keep us all on the road”, adding “without chiropodists and podiatrists we wouldn’t have a foot to stand on.”

A hundred years ago, the first professional organisation for chiropody in the United Kingdom was established with the foundation of the National Society of Chiropodists.  It was the bold vision of Dr Arnold Oxford, Earnest Runting and Edward Durlacher and evolved to become The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists as we know it today. As is so often the case with real visionaries, their imagination and pioneering spirit which set the tone of the Society in 1912 still plays a vital part in its ongoing success today.

This week has also seen another significant event for the podiatry industry, with the College of Podiatry confirmed as a registered charity. The College comprises all of the Society’s education and development activities, which will help provide members with better access to research funding.

Stuart Baird, chairman of The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists said, “We are extremely proud of the work and advancements made by the podiatry profession over the last 100 years. We now have Consultant Podiatrists employed in the NHS in fields of Podiatric Medicine and Podiatric Surgery, and the skills and commitment of our members play a critical role within the healthcare system in the UK. I thank HRH The Duchess of Cornwall for joining us on this day of celebration and for providing such a magnificent backdrop to launch our centenary celebrations.”
